Election Results... sort of

After the polls closed at 2:45 the popular votes led to the electoral college's decision on the candidate. However, due to a lack of Government students over 25 electoral votes were undecided, due to tied votes in multiple states. Though the Republican candidate earned 10 more electoral votes then her democratic opponent, they were unable to pass the needed 92 votes to win. So once again the President has yet to be decided.

We the FEC (federal election committee) along with the Supreme Ruler (Mr. Olsen) propose that an amendment be made to the constitution. This amendment give the students an extra day to vote for a candidate and clearly decide who should be President. To pass this amendment each class would have to debate the constitutionality and the best solution to this situation. If the amendment were to fail, the vote would be thrown to the House.

The undecided states include: Colorado, Florida, and Illinois. Expect a lot of campaigning and good luck picking the proper candidate.

The Constitution dictates that a presidential election where no candidate gets the majority of electoral votes, goes to the House of Representatives to be decided. In this case, each state has an equal vote. To carry this out, the Government and Citizenship students, acting as Congress, would then vote in their state delegations (as listed in the electoral college assignment sheet) for a candidate (details TBA).

However, one other option is possible: we may extend the voting one more day. But this would need to be done by constitutional amendment, which will require a 2/3rds vote of all 5 Congresses. Thus, Monday and Tuesday of this coming week, we will hold our first official session of congress. Each party may present their preference and then a vote will be taken. Again, 2/3 vote for ALL classes will be required to pass the amendment. I will have an amendment ready to be introduced (I will also act as the Speaker of the House and, as such, will conduct the debate). If the amendment passes, voting will take place Wednesday, possibly Thursday after school.

  4. It would be nice to know what you mean by more campaigning. And in response to what Ryan said, we might have gotten there after you did, but Jessie and I were there for pretty much the whole time both Wed. and Friday. But if you guys would like us to do more I love to know what you have in mind because we've done just about everything we can think of. Thanks, Nichole!

  5. Yeah, I agree. Mr. Olson kept telling all the independents that we needed to watch out 'cause the candidates would be trying to get our votes, but no one has bothered me yet. Not that i'm saying to come bug me though :).
